Three UO Players Reach Round of 32, Freshmen Make Splash

Oct 17, 2014

STANFORD, Calif. – Three Ducks advanced to the singles Round of 32 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships Friday at Stanford. Simon Stevens, Jayson Amos and Kevin Farin all won their matches in the Rounds of 128 and 64 to advance in the main bracket.

“I felt that we competed all day today,” head coach Nils Schyllander said. “As a group we battled really hard, and in general, it was a pretty good day.”

Stevens defeated Sacramento State’s Deric O. Wanland 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round. The freshman then pulled off an upset and dispatched the tournament’s 17th-seeded player, Anthony Tsodikov of Stanford in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. The Belgium native will play the tournament’s top seed tomorrow, Andre Goransson of California.

Amos – also a 17th-seeded player in the tournament – advanced to the Round of 32 in the same straight-set fashion that Stevens did. The sophomore’s first win came against Samuel Bloore of St. Mary’s 6-4, 6-0, and the second came over Fresno State’s Eric Komati 7-6 (1), 6-0.

Seventh-seeded Farin earned a bye in the first round, and then the junior defeated Wendell M. Watanabe of Washington 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

Alex Marcinkowski showed toughness and won against his first opponent, St. Mary’s William L. Martin 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the Ducks’ only three-set victory of the day. The redshirt freshman faced the No. 5 seed, Bernardo E. Saraiva in the next round and fell 6-1, 6-1. Regardless, the college debut for the Spokane, Wash., native was a success.

Freshman Blake Anthony also saw his first collegiate tennis action Friday and edged Gonzaga’s Sergio Chip 6-1, 6-3. Anthony then matched up against the No. 4 seeded Oskar Wikberg of California. Despite losing, Anthony was able to take a set against one of the top players at the tournament (6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-1).

Daan Maasland and Daniel Sardu both won their opening round matches, but the two veterans were both tripped up by Stanford Cardinals in the second round. The ninth-seeded Maasland lost to David Wilczynski 6-4, 6-2, and Sardu dropped his match to the No. 2 seed, Maciek Romanowicz 6-2, 6-2.

Maasland bounced back in doubles, however, and teamed up with Stevens to defeat Marksoo/Zemaitelis of Sacramento State 8-3.

Brent Chin lost his opening round singles match to Stanford’s Trey Strobel 6-4, 6-3, and Joey Swaysland also dropped his Round of 128 match to Everett J. Maltby of UC Davis 6-3, 7-6 (0).

Tomorrow’s Action: Maasland and Stevens will compete in the doubles Round of 32 tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., and all singles Round of 32 matches will begin at 10:30 a.m.
