Women’s Cross Country Wins White Race at Pre-Nats

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Washington State women’s cross country team won the White race and the Cougar men’s team placed 17th in the Blue race at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational meet Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Cougar senior Abby Regan (Coonamble, NSW, Australia) was the runner-up in the women’s 6,000 meters White race with a time of 21 minutes, 31.3 seconds. Other WSU women and their finishes were: Ruby Roberts 21st (22:12.4), Devon Bortfeld 37th (22:33.9), CharLee Linton 38th (22:33.9), Morgan Willson 46th (22:47.8), Emily Dwyer 78th (23:11.7), and Steffie Pavey 114th (23:38.8).

The WSU women won the 33-team White race with a score of 143 points, followed by Southern Illinois’ 182 points for second place.

“The women’s team ran very well,” WSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Wayne Phipps said. “It was great to get the win and to have Ruby running with us again.”

WSU redshirt senior Drew Jordan (Medford, Ore.) was the top Cougar finisher on the 8,000 meters course in the men’s Blue race at 58th with a time of 25:11.0. The other Cougar scorers included John Whelan 64th (25:13.7), Sam Levora 102nd (25:28.0), Jackson Haselnus 124th (25:37.7), Lee George 132nd (25:40.6), Conner Johnsen 198th (26:07.8), and Forrest Shaffer 199th (26:08.3). Oregon’s Edward Cheserek won the men’s title with a time of 24:04.5.

Colorado won the men’s team title with 35 points with Oregon second with 91 points. The WSU men’s team was 17th with 480 points. There were 46 men’s teams in the higher-seeded Blue race. Other West Region teams in this race included UC Santa Barbara 11th (404), and California 24th (646).

“It was a tough day for the guys,” Phipps said. “We did not accomplish what we had hoped today but I am still very confident in this team and in achieving our season goals.”

WSU also had runners racing in Lewiston, Idaho, at the Inland Empire Championships hosted by Lewis-Clark State. Cougar women and their times and finishes on the 5000m course: Ashlie Standow (17:38 - 18th), Abby Knight (18:07 - 31st), Alexys Garcia (18:59 - 60th), Amanda Henderson (`9:14 - 71st), Mallori Lindberg (19:14 - 72nd), and Ramona Morshead (20.16 - 91st). The lone Cougar man competing in the 8000m race was Alex Simpson (27:49 - 99th).

The next competition for the WSU cross country teams will be the Pac-12 Championships, Oct. 31, in Oakland.
