Three Bruin Doubles Teams Advance to Regional Semifinals
Malibu, Calif. - The UCLA men's tennis team dominated the doubles draw at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals on Sunday, sending three Bruin teams into Monday's semifinals. In addition, top-seed Mackenzie McDonald also reached the semifinals of singles with a tight, three-set victory over teammate Martin Redlicki.
With three Bruin doubles teams in the semifinals, UCLA is guaranteed a finalist in this year's tournament. Second-seeded McDonald and Redlicki will meet teammates Gage Brymer and Dennis Mkrtchian in the bottom half of the doubles draw on Monday. Third-seeded Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell will look to book their spot in the final when they meet USC's Eric Johnson and Jonny Wang. Both matches are at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
UCLA began the day with four players in the quarterfinals of singles, however only McDonald remains. Following an extremely close 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 win over Redlicki, McDonald will take on fourth-seeded Max de Vroome of USC in Monday's semifinals. de Vroome ruined an all-Bruin semifinal in the top half of the draw, as he knocked off Mkrtchian, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Brymer, the third seed, was also on the verge of the semifinals, however he fell to San Diego's Uros Petronijevic, 6-3, 7-5.
