UCLA Men's Tennis Players Still Alive in Malibu
Malibu, Calif. - Five UCLA players moved into the round of 16 of singles play, as action at the 2014 USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals continued on Saturday at Pepperdine University.
All three of the Bruins' ranked singles players advanced without too much trouble. Top-seed and 13th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald was a 6-1, 7-6 winner of UC Irvine's Rafael Davidian. Gage Brymer, the nation's 45th-ranked singles player, had the most impressive result on the day, losing just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win over San Diego's Geoffrey Fosso. Dennis Mkrtchian, ranked No. 93 nationally, was also a straight-set winner, beating LMU's Joat Farah, 6-4, 6-2.
Additional wins by Joseph Di Giulio (def. Eric Johnson/USC, 6-3, 6-4) and Martin Redlicki (def. Nico Mertens/UCI, 7-5, 7-6) upped UCLA's total of players in the round of 16 to five.
Three Bruin teams also reached the quarterfinals in the doubles draw, with the duos of McDonald/Redlicki, Brymer/Mkrtchian and Di Giulio/Karue Sell each posting two wins on Saturday.
