Cal Sixth after 36 Holes at Tavistock

Oct 20, 2014

ORLANDO, FL – Cal (283-286 – 569, -7) used the fourth-best round of the day to move up one spot into sole possession of sixth place Monday following the first 36 holes of play at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. The Golden Bears’ four scoring players Monday at the par-72, 7,200-yard Lake Nona Golf & Country Club were three-under par on the front nine before setting for a one-over par on the back.

“It was somewhat bittersweet,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “At one point with just a few holes left we had the low round of the day and got ourselves much closer to the lead before the floor dropped out. A young and inexperienced team is going to go through these kinds of fits and starts, but we played some really good golf at times. Hopefully we’ll learn from this and come back even stronger tomorrow.”

The Golden Bears head into Tuesday’s third and final round trailing second-round leader Vanderbilt (271-279 – 550, -26), Florida State (270-282 – 552, -24), host Texas Tech (267-287 – 554, -22), top-ranked Illinois (276-289 – 565, -11) and North Florida (278-288 – 566, -10).

Vanderbilt’s Carson Jacobs (68-65 – 133, -11) is on top of the player leaderboard after two rounds with a three-stroke lead over a trio of Texas Tech players.

Cameron Shaw (70-70 – 140, -4) is the top Cal player after 36 holes in a tie for 14th place after his second consecutive two-under par round moved him up 13 spots from his second-round start. Shaw had a team-high-tying five birdies for the second straight round.

“I played with a lot more control with my approach into greens today, and it paid off because of how much tougher the pins were compared to the first day,” said Shaw, who tied for the 10th best round of the day overall on Monday and had the top round by a Cal player. “I’m happy with my position so far in such a strong field and hopefully with another strong round tomorrow I can make my way up the leaderboard. Collectively the team did a much better job in the second round, and I’m sure if we pull out some big rounds tomorrow we will find ourselves closer to the top.”

“Cam has played some great golf,” Desimone said. “He’s a little on the outside and I don’t know if he can play well enough to pull out a win, but he’s showing that he’s one of the top players in the country.”

KK Limbhasut (71-71 – 142, -2) also moved up 13 spots Monday into a tie for 23rd with a round that included a team-high-tying birdies along with Shaw for the second consecutive day. Limbhasut was four-under par for the round after making birdies on the same three holes (14-16) for a second consecutive round before suffering a triple bogey on the par-four 18th.

 Ben Doyle (73-72 – 145, +1) and Sebastian Crampton (72-73 – 145, +1) rose 14 and 10 points, respectively, and are among nine players tied for 34th.

Keelan Kilpatrick (70-76 – 146, +2) was the only Cal player to fall Monday, dropping 16 spots into a tie for 43rd.

Cal will play in a group along with top-ranked Illinois and North Florida during Tuesday’s third round after playing with Baylor and UCF on Monday. Tuesday’s round will conclude Cal’s fall season with the team’s next tournament its spring opener January 26-27 at the Arizona Intercollegiate.

“It will be a good plane ride home tomorrow if we can pull up a couple of spots and that’s the plan,” Desimone added. “But win, lose or draw we’ve had a hell of a fall.”

Cal has won two of its first four events (Windon Memorial, Alister MacKenzie Invitational) during the 2014 fall season, while finishing second (Gopher Invitational) and third (Itani Quality Homes Collegiate) in the others.
