Oct 20, 2014

Senior midfielder Sam Mewis was named the Pac-12 Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after orchestrating five of UCLA's nine goals this past week in shutout wins over No. 22 California and No. 23 Arizona.

Mewis had two assists vs. the Golden Bears and one goal and two assists vs. the Wildcats. In the win over Cal, she assisted on the game-winner by Darian Jenkins in the 47th minute and then helped the Bruins double up their lead to 2-0 with an assist on Sarah Killion’s goal. Against Arizona, she assisted on the game-winner, executing a nifty give-and-go with Taylor Smith for a 37th minute goal. She executed another give-and-go with Caprice Dydasco in the 52nd minute, with Dydasco scoring her first goal of the year to make the score 3-0. Mewis scored a goal of her own in the 89th minute, her team-leading 10th of the season. Mewis was dangerous offensively in both games, with two shots on goal vs. Cal and three shots on goal vs. Arizona. She had a shot that pinged the crossbar against Cal and another than bounced off the right post against Arizona.

The Bruin team co-captain has a goal or assist in five consecutive games and in 12 of UCLA’s 15 games this year. She leads the team with 10 goals, six game-winning goals and a Pac-12-leading 27 points. She also ranks second on the team and in the Pac-12 with seven assists. Mewis’ four assists this week moved her into sixth place on UCLA’s career assist chart with 26, and her four points in the Arizona game put her one point shy of UCLA’s Top 10 in career points with 76.

Mewis’ honor is the first of her career, UCLA's eighth this season and the 48th all-time for the Bruins.

Washington State's Mariah Powers was voted Defensive Player of the Week, while Arizona State's Chandler Morris earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
