Cal Closes Fall with Sixth-Place Finish at Tavistock

Oct 21, 2014

ORLANDO, FL – Cal (283-286-284 – 853, -11) wrapped up its fall season Tuesday by finishing sixth at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational that featured four of the nation’s top 10 teams according to the latest polls by both Golfstat and Golfweek. The Golden Bears’ lineup that featured three true freshmen – KK Limbhasut, Ben Doyle and Sebastian Crampton – shot under par in each of its three rounds.

“The guys did a good solid job at this event,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “We beat the fourth-ranked team in the country in Baylor and a lot of other very good teams. It is reflective of the solid fall season that we had. This is a good golf team and looks to be getting better.”

Limbhasut (71-71-69 – 211, -5) also shot under-par scores in each of the three rounds and finished 13th overall, moving up 10 spots on the final day with a three-under par round that was his best of the event. Limbhasut made five birdies for the third consecutive round, including on three of his last seven holes.

Cameron Shaw (70-70-73 – 213, -3) was the next Cal player on the scoreboard in a tie for 22nd after starting the day tied for 14th. Shaw’s final round included two birdies and three bogeys.

Doyle (73-72-71 – 216, E) and Crampton (72-73-71 – 216, E) were both among a group of five players tied for 35th. Both had one round under par, one even round and one round over par during the event. Doyle’s round consisted of three birdies and two bogeys. Crampton had his second eagle of the tournament on the par-four 14th and four birdies but also made five bogeys.

“It was great to be at the Tavistock and play against such a great field, but we would have liked to play much better than we did,” Crampton said. “We all felt as if we left a lot out there. Looking at the fall as a whole is a positive. Whenever the team wins twice, we know we did something right. I’m happy with the way I played this fall although this event was a bit of a letdown for me. I know I could have played much better than I did.”

Keelan Kilpatrick (70-76-74 – 220, +4) was also in the lineup and finished in a tie for 52nd. He had four birdies and was two-under before making double bogeys on two of his final four holes on the par-five 15th and par-four 18th. He also had two earlier bogeys.

Florida State (270-282-275 – 827, -37) won the team title while Vanderbilt had both the individual medalist in Hunter Stewart (65-72-66 – 203, -13) and runner up in Carson Jacobs (68-65-71 – 204, -12).

Cal won two of its five events in the fall of 2014 with victories at the Windon Memorial and Alister MacKenzie Invitational, while finishing second (Gopher Invitational), third (Itani Quality Homes Collegiate) and sixth (Tavistock Collegiate Invitational) in its three others.

“I thought we would be a good team that would get better as fall went along and that’s exactly what happened,” Desimone said. “It’s good to see the guys grow as players and a team. I was very pleased with the fall and we will be very competitive when we get into the spring. We’re really optimistic about the future of our program.”

Cal will next be in action when the Bears open the 2015 spring season January 26-27 at the Arizona Intercollegiate.
