Bears Open Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. – Top-seeded Karla Popovic captured her first singles victory as the Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational began Friday, while Popovic, Lyann Hoang  and Stephane Lin also competed in doubles on the Saint Mary’s campus.

Popovic defeated Sacramento State’s Olivia Boija, 6-1, 6-2, in the red singles round of 32. The Golden Bear plays the Gaels’ Kareena Mangi at 9:45 a.m. in Saturday’s round of 16.

Freshmen Hoang and Popovic won their first match, beating Sacramento State’s Alina Soltanici/Daria Savchenko, 8-5, in the red doubles round of 16. But the Bears lost to Washington’s Elianne Douglas-Miron/Miki Kobayashi, 8-4, in the red quarters.

Lin, a redshirt freshman, partnered with Samantha Martino of UC Davis to win a white doubles round of 16 match, 8-4, over Santa Clara’s Delphine Rouvillois/Zeina El Tawil. But Lin/Martino lost in the white quarterfinals to another Washington pair in Julija Lukac/Riko Shimizu, 8-4.

The three-day tournament continues on Saturday.
