TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men’s golf team will conclude its fall season on Monday and Tuesday when it takes part in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, Fla.
McNeese State will host the 15-team tournament at the Quail Valley Golf Club, a par-72, 7,460-yard track at 8:30 EST on Monday morning.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for our team to go out a go out and finish on a strong note for the fall,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “We’ve seen three freshmen who’ve been in our lineups most of the year and have certainly had a mix of things that are good and some things that have left us hungry during completion. I’m certain will be ready for this tournament, we’ve had some time to prepare for this and we’ll certainly be ready to when it comes time to tee it up on Monday.”
“I think we’re a very hungry team. The experience we’ve got from the seniors, from guys who’ve played a lot of golf for our team, combined with the talent that we have at the younger ages with the freshman who have played. I think they’re going to have a little bit better understanding of what they need to work on in the next two, three months for the spring season so that when we come out (of the spring) we’ll be ready to preform and hopefully win right away.”
Freshman George Cunningham, the team leader with a 73.44 stroke average in 9 rounds, will play No. 1 for the Wildcats in their fall finale. The Tucson, native has one top-10 finishes in three starts this season, posting two rounds at par or better.
Senior Alex McMahon will play No. 2 spot, followed by classmate Brenden Redfern at No. 3. Freshmen Peter Koo and Max Donohue will round up Arizona’s lineup at the No. 4 and 5 spots respectively when the Wildcats head to Florida for the three-round tournament.
“I think our team does a really good job of playing within themselves,” Anderson said. “And I think for the most part we’ve proven to ourselves at home that we can post good numbers. It just hasn’t happened where we’ve been able to carry over good play on the road yet. Moving forward we’ve tried to do some things in practice to make our guys uncomfortable and try to learn how to preform when we’re not comfortable. Hopefully those things we’ve worked on the last week or two will translate into some success for this upcoming tournament, but also moving forward.”
