Cats in Position to Claim Two Championships on Sunday
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – For the second consecutive day, senior Laura Oldham and junior Inge Hendrikx dominated the competition, as each strung together consecutive singles wins to advance to championship matches in their respective brackets, Saturday on day two of the Matador Invitational.
Hendrikx (8-1) notched her seventh and eighth wins on the fall, as she rallied to defeat UC Riverside’s Karla Dulay 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 before rolling past Cal State Los Angeles’ Matsuoka Nazomi 7-6, 6-1 in the pink singles semifinals. Hendrikx will play UCI’s Andrea Duva tomorrow at 10 a.m. MST for the flight title.
Oldham (3-1) followed suit, running her overall win streak to three straight, after earning victories over UC San Diego’s Kyra Scott, 6-0, 6-0, and Portland’s Jelena Lazarevic 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 to punch her ticket to the singles black bracket final. Oldham will take on Portland’s Sophie Van Den Aarssenat tomorrow at 10 a.m. MST in the championship match.
Hendrikx and Oldham have combined to go 6-0 and take 12 of 14 sets in singles play so far on the weekend.
Arizona nearly put themselves in position to compete for a third title, as Oldham and Hendrikx rallied from an early 5-0 deficit in doubles play, but couldn’t quite finish the deal, as they fell to Cal State Fullerton’s duo of Emilia Borkowski and Kalika Slevcove 8-6. The Arizona tandem will play for third place tomorrow at 9 a.m. MST.
