Huskies Weather The Storm At Head of the American
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – UW women’s rowing endured less than ideal conditions to come up with a good showing at the Head of the American on Saturday.
“It was windy and rainy all day, which made the whole regatta an adventure,” head coach Bob Ernst said. “All in all, it was a good day for the Huskies.”
UW had nine pairs entered in the women’s collegiate pair race, a race with a total of 52 entries, making it one of the largest pair races in the world. Grace Spoors and Fiona Gammond were the highest placing pair, finishing in third. The Huskies placed four pairs in the top-10 and all nine finished 27th or better.
Head of the American Full Results
One of the features of the way the Huskies approach this regatta is that their eights lineups are a function of the results of the pairs race. Today, they had two completely new lineups that they had never raced before. The first eight finished fourth overall and second eight finished in the top seven in a field of 22 collegiate eights.
The collegiate field included the likes of California, USC, Stanford and UCLA, who are all conference foes and finished in the top-10 at last year’s NCAA Championships. The five-kilometer course will also be the site of the Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Championships for the next two years.
UW will finish its fall schedule with the Head of the Lake on Sunday, Nov. 2 in Seattle.
