Cougars Through One at Las Vegas Showdown
BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Led by freshman Bree Wanderscheid, the Washington State women’s golf team finished the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown tied for seventh place. The Cougars opened the tournament at the Boulder Creek Golf Club with a 295 (+7). WSU sits in a tie with Minnesota in the 18-team field, and one stroke back from a three-way tie for fourth place.
“I was proud of the team today,” Cougar Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. “We played tough. I thought we finished with a solid opening round. We’re looking forward to the next two rounds and just taking it one hole at a time.”
Wanderscheid led the Cougars, carding five birdies on the day. On the back nine, played on the Coyote Run Course, Wanderscheid shot 1-under, before making the turn and carding three birdies on the Desert Hawk Course. Wanderscheid finished 1-under (71) and sits in a four-way tie for seventh place.
Senior Kristen Rue finished two strokes back from Wanderscheid, shooting 1-over (73). Rue shot even with par on the back nine, and finished the day tied for 16th. Freshman Alivia Brown finished two strokes back from her senior teammate. Brown shot even with par on the back nine, and carded three birdies on the day. Brown finished 3-over (75) and tied for 41st.
Playing as an individual, junior Rachel Lewis shot 3-under through her opening nine holes. Lewis carded a 73 (+1) and is tied with Rue in 16th place.
Senior Lindsay Harmon provided the final counting score for the Cougars, carding a 76 (+4). Harmon is tied for 50th, and one stroke ahead of junior Nani Yanagi. Yanagi (+5, 77) is currently tied for 58th.
