MELBOURNE, Australia -- Washington senior Cheng-Tsung Pan came up just short in his attempt to win the Asia-Pacific Amateur and earn the automatic berth in The Masters. Pan finished tied for fifth and 11 shots out of the lead.
Pan came into the final round tied for second, but eight shots back of leader and eventual champion Antonio Murdaca of Australia. Murdaca finished with a 1-under 71 to complete the tournament at 13-under 275. Pan's final round was a 2-over 74 as he dropped back to a tie for fifth.
Pan finished the tournament at 2-under 286 after rounds of 73, 68, 71 and 74. He was attempting to qualify for The Masters as an invitation to the major championship was at stake for the winner. Pan has already played in two U.S. Opens and a British Open and was looking to qualify for his third different major.
Pan has been in fine form this spring, winning two gold medals at the Asian Games for Taiwan, then returning to his Husky teammates for a runner-up finish at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational and a tied for third at the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
The Dawgs are done for the fall, but will return this spring, beginning at the Waikoloa Invitational that gets underway on February 5.
