Below are quotes from the media day interviews:
Head Coach Scott Rueck
On last week’s Pac-12 Media Day…
“It was an exciting way to kick off the season, and there’s just a great energy down there. The Pac-12 does it right, and the Pac-12 Network studios are amazing, so it was just a fun day. We did our promos, had fun on set, and made a little bit of a name for ourselves that day.”
On receiving first-place votes in the Pac-12 Coaches Poll…
“Well it’s an honor, but at the same time we haven’t played a game yet, so that stuff goes in and out really quickly. It was nice to be recognized for the success we had last year and for the returners we have back. People are obviously really excited for this team, and now it’s up to us to do something about it.”
On the team’s outlook coming into this season…
“The one thing we added this year, aside from our three new players, is experience. This is really year two for this group. We lost a great senior in Alyssa Martin, but this group had a great offseason and they come into this year with a different level of expectation.”
Senior Guard Ali Gibson
On being the only senior on the team…
“It’s been amazing to see the process. It’s exciting to be a leader in the program and to be able to take some of the younger players and show them what it’s like to be successful at this level.”
On the expectations this season…
“I think our team, regardless of the media, wants to go farther than we did last year. It’s exciting to have these kinds of expectations. Instead of being the underdog, now we have some eyes on us, and we’re excited for the new challenge that brings.”
On the Oregon State fan base…
“It’s been amazing. This is a community where, if you win, people will come support you, and to be able to have fans that come from all around is incredible. We have one of the best home courts in the Pac-12, and that really helps us as a team.”
Junior Forward Deven Hunter
On the closeness of this year’s team…
“We mesh really well as a group. We all have similar goals and similar personalities, so I think we work really well together. Even off the court we spend time together doing things we all enjoy doing. Everybody comes from a different background, but we’re like sisters.”
On the excitement of having national attention…
“It’s exciting to know that our hard work is paying off and that people all around are seeing it. Now we just need to keep putting in work to show everybody that we can take another step forward. We have an exciting year ahead.”
