Men’s Golf Finish Tied for Ninth at Quail Valley
VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Arizona men’s golf team wrapped up its fall season on Tuesday with a surge up to a ninth place finish at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate.
The Wildcats saved their best round of the fall for last, firing a three-under 285 on Tuesday to bring their total of 869 (+5). UA steadily improved over the course of the tournament, moving from 12th after the first two rounds before settling into a ninth place tie at the conclusion of play.
“Our guys showed a lot of heart today,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “We knew we needed to come out and play well to finish the fall season on a positive note.”
Senior Alex McMahon concluded the fall season earning his first top-10 finish of the year and the fourth of his career, shooting a 68(-4) on Tuesday to bring his total to 210 (-6). That score was good for a share of fifth place.
Freshman George Cunningham posted the first top-20 finish of his young career to round out the fall, also shooting minus-two 70 on Tuesday to tie for 18th with a total of 214 (-2). Senior Brenden Redfern finished Tuesday’s play with a 71(+1), and finished in a tie for 32nd with a total of 218 (+2). Freshman Max Donohue finished the tournament in a tie for 67th place with a two-over, 74 on the final round putting him at a total of 227 (+11). Classmate Peter Koo concluded his first fall season with a 75th place finish and a final score of 256 (+40).
“I think an outing like today shows us we can post a good score without relying on one or two of the same guys,” Anderson said. “Obviously Alex and George have emerges as reliable leaders on the course as far as production. But this week Brenden made some strides in the right direction and had it close to red figures…We have lots of work to do, but this group is willing to do it.”
The Wildcats will resume competition in late January, when they host the Arizona Intercollegiate at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson. For more information on Arizona men’s golf, follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter.
