Six Bruins Reach Quarterfinals at So. Cal Intercollegiates
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's tennis team dominated the first day of main draw play at the 58th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday, sending six players into the quarterfinals of singles action at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Top-seeded Gage Brymer took care of business as expected, winning both of his early-round matches in straight sets to set up a quarterfinal meeting with fellow Bruin sophomore Joseph Di Giulio, who is seeded fifth. Joining Brymer and Di Giulio in the top-half of the draw is fourth-seeded Karue Sell, who lost a total of just six games in his opening two matches. He will face Azusa Pacific's Jan Meyer on Friday.
Second-seeded Dennis Mkrtchian booked his spot in the quarterfinals by downing teammate Nikolas Ramadan, 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16. He will take on unseeded teammate Ryoto Tachi, who won his opening-round match and then made it through to the quarterfinals after BYU's Francis Sargeant pulled out of the tournament due to injury.
Fifth-seeded freshman Martin Redlicki is also through to the quarters following a pair of straight-set victories and he will next face the winner of UCSB's Tobias Galskov and Concordia's Christian Wickenhauser.
The only other action on Thursday was one round of qualifying doubles, where UCLA's Michael Guzman and Ramadan downed UCSD's Alexandre Miaule and Horea Porutiu, 8-6 to advance to Friday's main draw.
All quarterfinal singles matches are schedule to begin at 11:00 a.m. Two rounds of doubles will take place at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Click HERE to access a complete schedule with updated draws.
