Oct 31, 2014

SEATTLE – UW men’s and women’s rowing will complete their fall schedules close to home this Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Head of the Lake, hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club.

Racing kicks off at 8 a.m. PT with the Men’s Collegiate/Open 8+, followed by the Men’s Collegiate JV and 3V as well as the Women’s Championship 8+ soon after. The field includes many of the collegiate teams from the northwest, including Gonzaga, Oregon, Oregon State and rival Washington State.

The men’s squad is coming off a great performance at the Head of the Charles as they took first in the collegiate division of the Men’s Championship Fours and second in the Championship Eights, also in the collegiate division.

“This should be a really great environment for us and our athletes as it’s the biggest fall regatta in our region,” men’s head coach Michael Callahan said. “This regatta will be a good chance for us to see if we have improved from the Head of the Charles and should serve as a good barometer of our training through the fall.”

UW men’s crew will enter its men’s varsity boat in the Men’s Collegiate/Open 8+ and three boats in the Men’s Collegiate JV 8+, with the second varsity and two freshman boats. In the Men’s Collegiate 3V 8+, the Huskies will enter their third, fourth and fifth varsity boats.

UW will also enter four boats in the Championship Men’s 4+ comprised of the first and second varsity eights. That race is scheduled to begin at 9:48 a.m.

The women’s crew last raced at the Head of the American in Gold River, Calif., and had nine pairs entered in the largest collegiate pair race in the world, with 52 entries. Grace Spoors and Fiona Gammond were the highest placing pair for UW, taking third. The Huskies also took third- and fifth-place in the in the Women’s Collegiate 8+ Final.

“The Head of the Lake is a spectacle, it’s going to be exciting,” women’s head coach Bob Ernst said. “They’ll be lots of entries in all the different races out there. All the top rowers in the northwest will be here.”

The women’s crew will enter boats in the Championship Women’s 8+, the JV 8+ and 3V 8+, which are all scheduled for early in the 8 o’clock hour. The Huskies will also race two boats in the Women’s Collegiate/Open 4+, to begin at 8:34 a.m.
