Bettendorf’s Career Night Powers Ducks to Win
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 12 Oregon volleyball team rallied after a first set defeat to take down California in four sets, Friday, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18.
How It Happened: The Ducks got off to a slow start, hitting only .196 in the first set before finding their stride to finish the match at .308. Despite the decisive set victories for Oregon, the home team was pressured by the Bears through each, but closed strong. The Ducks finished the second, third and fourth sets on 8-3, 7-3 and 6-2 runs, respectively.
Breakout junior Martenne Bettendorf led the team with a career high 21 kills on 46 attempts. On the defensive end, Amanda Benson finished with 21 digs, marking the third-straight match with more than 20 digs.
What It Means: Oregon is back on the winning track just in time to host the No. 1 team in the country as Stanford comes to Eugene, Sunday. Coach Jim Moore was very clear about what it will take for his team to hand the unbeaten Cardinal their first loss of the season.
“We’re going to have to play our best match of the year,” he said. “If we’re going to compete in that match, we have to play our best match of the year.”
Bettendorf Goes Big: Martenne Bettendorf’s 21 kills tops her previous career record of 17 and is the most by any Duck in a match this season. Liz Brenner previously recorded 18 in three matches.
Notes and Numbers: Three Oregon players finished with double digit kills, with Kacey Nady (12) and Frankie Shebby (11) behind Bettendorf…those three players combined for 44 of the team’s 67 kills and hit .358…Oregon hit over .300 for the 10th time this season, matching the total from a year ago…Maggie Scott led the team with 31 assists.
Up Next: Oregon’s match with Stanford will begin Sunday at 11 a.m., and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Fans who bring their ticket stub from Saturday’s football game will receive $3 general admission.
