Nov 4, 2014

STANFORD, Calif.- Freshman Tom Fawcett will open tournament play on Thursday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships to be played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Fawcett will square off against Virginia’s Thai Kwiatkowski on Thursday at 9 a.m. PT in the first round.

Fawcett earned a bid by capturing his first career singles title at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, defeating Santa Clara’s Ashot Khacharyan 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Making his home debut and playing in just his second collegiate tournament, Fawcett became Stanford’s first singles champion at the regional event since Ryan Thacher outlasted California’s Ben McLachlan 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 back in 2011 in Seattle.

Kwiatkowski punched his ticket to New York by receiving an at-large berth after a semifinal finish at the ITA All-American Championships. Kwiatkowski was named the ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year last season, compiling a 20-1 overall record while playing mainly at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots of the lineup.
