Thomas has lone pin at Orange & Black intrasquad

Nov 6, 2014

Junior 165-pounder Seth Thomas had the lone pin on Thursday at the Oregon State wrestling team’s annual Orange and Black Intrasquad dual at Gill Coliseum.

Thomas pinned freshman Rodney Williams in 4:37 to highlight the Black team’s 26-9 victory. He was 11-4 in 2013-14 as an understudy to Toney Chay, who has been unable to compete this year.

Freshman 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser and redshirt freshman 197-pounder Cody Crawford added major decisions for the Black team, which primarily consisted of returning starters from last year’s Pacific-12 Conference champions.

“We knew there would be some tough matches, because guys wrestle each other in the room a lot” and are familiar with each other’s styles, OSU coach Jim Zalesky said. “You’re kind of cautious sometimes, you saw a little bit of that but we also saw some guys really open up.”

OSU’s returning NCAA qualifiers went 3-1. Junior Joey Palmer edged redshirt freshman Jack Hathaway at 133; senior Joe Latham topped senior Kurtis Ramsay 9-6 at 174 and senior Taylor Meeks outlasted freshman Corey Griego 5-2 at 184.

However, 157-pound redshirt sophomore Joey Delgado, moving up two weights this year, fell 10-5 senior Alex Elder, who is dropping down from 165. The starter there will succeed the graduated R.J. Pena, one of OSU’s top wrestlers the past four years.

“I knew those were going to be tight matches that could go either way,” Zalesky said. “These next three competitions will help us set the lineup for down the road.”

It was the final tune-up before the 20th-ranked Beavers open the season on Sunday at the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University in Forest Grove. The Beavers are the three-time defending Pacific-12 Conference champions.

They start the regular season on Nov. 13 with a home match against Southern Oregon. If the Beavers defeat SOU, they will become the third program in NCAA history with 1,000 dual-meet victories. It would also be Zalesky’s 100th dual-meet win at OSU.

Season and single-match tickets for the upcoming season are on sale. General admission season tickets are $36 for adults and $24 for seniors (62-over) and youth (3-18). Single-match tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors/youth; all seats are general admission.

Fans can purchase tickets by calling 1-800-GOBEAVS; by visiting the ticket area on osubeavers.com, or in person at the Gill Coliseum ticket office from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Season tickets are good for the entire six-event regular-season home slate. The Beavers host Southern Oregon (Nov. 13); Arizona State (Nov. 24); Stanford (Jan. 10); Cal State-Bakersfield (Jan. 17); Cal Poly (Feb. 7) and Boise State (Feb. 8).

The Pacific-12 Conference tournament, scheduled for March 1 at Gill Coliseum, is not included in the season-ticket package. Details on ticketing for that event will be released at a later date.
