Women's Tennis Starts Strong in New York

NEW YORK - The UCLA women's tennis team had a solid opening day of play at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday at the USTA's National Tennis Center.

Second-seeded Chanelle Van Nguyen opened up the tournament with a win in singles, as she downed Michigan's Ronit Yurovsky, 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 32. Next up for Van Nguyen is a showdown with Miami's Stephanie Wagner in Friday's round of 16. Wagner advanced following a three-set win over Jessica Wacnik of Boston College.

In doubles, UCLA's Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips were also victorious, downing Florida's Josie Kuhlman and Peggy Porter, 6-4, 6-2. They will take on the winner of Thursday's late match between Barry's Linda Fritschken/Emma Onlia and Cal's third-seeded Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi on Friday.
