Ducks Cage Cougars Behind Warner?s Record Performance

11/09/14 | Women's Volleyball

Pullman, Wash. – The No. 11 Oregon volleyball team finished its weekend road trip with a 3-1 win against Washington State, Sunday, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 25-19.

How it Happened: Washington State made it difficult for the Oregon (18-6, 8-6 Pac-12) attack which was held well below its season average to a hitting mark of .242, but the Ducks used balance to get their points. Each of the six hitters in Oregon's 6-2 system finished with seven or more kills while Liz Brenner (12), Serena Warner (11) and Martenne Bettendorf (10) ended the match in double figures.

Oregon had to fight off the Cougars in the first set before pulling away to win handily, but surmounted sizeable leads early in the third and fourth sets to roll on. Amanda Benson was spectacular in creating that lead in the fourth set, serving to nine straight Oregon points from 2-2 all the way to 11-3 when she was stopped, but not before recording four service aces in the span.

What it Means: After being swept by the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country, a win is just what was needed for Oregon with six matches remaining this season. Despite dropping the second set, the Ducks were in control for most of the match against a Washington State team which Jim Moore praised after the match for being much better than its 1-13 conference record.

Warner's Record Afternoon: Serena Warner finished the day with 11 kills on 12 attempts with no hitting errors for a hitting percentage of .917. That number is an Oregon school record surpassing Tia Stewart who hit .900 against Gonzaga in 1997.

Notes and Numbers: Liz Brenner recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs…Amanda Benson co-led the team with 14 digs as well…in addition to her record night, Warner led the team with five blocks.

Up Next: Oregon will head to the dessert for a pair of ranked team in No. 16 Arizona, Thursday at 5 p.m. and No. 20 Arizona State, Saturday at 6 p.m.
