Harrison and McPhillips Crowned National Indoor Champions

Nov 9, 2014

NEW YORK - UCLA's Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips became the first Bruin tandem to win a doubles title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in nearly 20 years on Sunday, taking a straight-set victory in the final at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.

Harrison and McPhillips, unseeded in the 32-team draw, were crowned champions following a 6-2, 6-3 win over second-seeded Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger of Auburn. The Bruin duo knocked off the tournament's top 2 seeds en route to the title, also downing top-seeded Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies of Clemson in Saturday's semifinals.

Harrison and McPhillips are only the second UCLA team to win a title at the National Indoors, joining 1995 winners Keri Phebus and Susie Starrett.
