ROLLING HILLS, Calif. – Freshman Mitch Stewart claimed the singles title at the Jack Kramer Invite this weekend to lead the men’s tennis team in their final tournament of the fall season. Stewart and freshman Jake Douglas both reached the quarterfinals of the meet which featured some of the country’s top teams.
Stewart, out of Federal Way, Washington, opened the tournament with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over UC Irvine’s Jonathan Poon. He then defeated Arkadis Slobodkins of SMU, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 before knocking off Baylor’s Vincent Schneider, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Stewart then outlasted Pac-12 foe Nolan Paige of Stanford 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 setting up a face-off with Nate Lemmons of SMU. The Husky freshman was able to handle Lemmons in two sets to pick up a 6-4, 7-5 singles championship title.
Freshman Jake Douglas earned two wins over SMU opponents in the first and second rounds before falling to Paige of Stanford 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
The event was hosted by Loyola Marymount and included players from LMU, SMU, Baylor, Arizona, USC, Oregon, Stanford, UC Irvine and the UW.
The Huskies return to the courts on January 10 as they host Portland State to kick off the spring seasl.
