TEMPE , Ariz. - The NCAA today announced that the Sun Devil soccer team was one of 64 teams to receive a bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Sun Devils will host Northern Arizona in a first-round game this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
The Sun Devils (11-5-4, 4-4-3 Pac-12) will be making their seventh all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and their fourth in the last six years under eighth-year head coach Kevin Boyd.
ASU is led offensive by junior forward Cali Farquharson (tied for first in the Pac-12 with 14 goals) and freshman forward Aly Moon (tied for seventh in the Pac-12 with eight goals). Both Farquharson (twice) and Moon (once) earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors earlier this season. The duo combined for 22 goals, the most combined goals by two players on the same team in the Pac-12.
Junior McKenzie Berryhill has helped anchor the Devils’ back line along with junior Sara Tosti, sophomore Mckenzie Grossman, redshirt sophomore Alyssa Martinez and freshman Madison Stark, who is the only Sun Devil to have started all 20 games this season and has logged more minutes than any player on the team this season. They have helped support senior goalkeeper Chandler Morris, whose 7.5 shutouts this season are the second most ever by a Sun Devil in a single season. Morris is also ranked No. 2 on ASU’s all-time list in career shutouts with 19.
Senior Brianna Gonzalez has been a tremendous presence in the ASU midfield having started 19 of 20 games this season. Gonzalez was named the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Week following ASU’s 1-1 tie vs. top-ranked UCLA earlier this season.
