Nov 10, 2014

VICTORIA, British Columbia – Seven current Washington State University rowers and former rower Lisa Roman competed at the Canadian Rowing Championships this past weekend at Elk Lake at Victoria, British Columbia. Roman’s crew placed third amongst all women’s pairs.

Roman competed with the Canadian National Team over the summer and is vying for a spot with the team at the 2016 Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro. After Friday and Saturday’s racing, Roman, and her teammate Cristy Nurse, qualified for the Women’s Pair A Final, the top race in the event. Roman and Nurse placed third, representing the London Training Center, in the extremely close race as less than 1.5 seconds separated the first and third-place crews.

After preliminary racing, junior Nicole Hare (Alberta Rowing Association), and redshirt junior Kayla Wakulich (Row Ontario) qualified for the Women’s Single Scull B and E Finals, respectively. Hare placed third in the B Final, and ended the race just over 3.5 seconds behind the first-place finisher. In the E Final, Wakulich was able to out-stroke three other rowers, en route to another third-place finish.

Juniors Morgan Cathrea and Jordan Watson rowed in a women’s pair together and qualified to compete in the B Final, Sunday, after the weekend’s earlier racing. The two represented Rowing British Columbia. The crew placed fourth in another tight race, with just over four seconds separating the top four crews.

Seniors Mickey Aylard and Megan McDonald, along with Emily Morrow, a freshman, advanced to compete in the Women’s Pair C Final. Morrow (Saskatchewan Rowing Association), won the C final with club teammate Sabina Proctor. Aylard and McDonald (Rowing British Columbia) formed the third-place pair on Sunday and finished just over four seconds behind their Washington State teammate.

The Cougars will open up their spring season, Saturday, March 28, at the Pac-12 Challenge at Redwood Shores, Calif.
