STANFORD, Calif. – No. 8 Stanford will pursue the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history Saturday at 11 a.m. (PT) when it takes on No. 10 Louisville in Storrs, Conn.
The Cardinal (18-2) will make its 13th appearance in the national competition and sixth in the past eight years. It will be Stanford’s first meeting against Louisville (15-5) since a 4-1 defeat on Nov. 1, 2009. Louisville will make its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
The winner of the Stanford-Louisville game will play either No. 3 Connecticut, Delaware or Kent State on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. (PT) with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
Stanford split a pair of games this past weekend at the NorPac Tournament, defeating UC Davis 2-1 in the semifinals and falling to Liberty 1-0 in the championship match. Maddie Secco, Sarah Helgeson and Shannon Herold were named to the NorPac All-Tournament Team.
Lauren Becker and Jessica Chisholm led the Stanford attack with a goal apiece against UC Davis, while the defense continued to play well. Dulcie Davies made six saves against Liberty to keep Stanford within striking distance after facing an early deficit.
Stanford leads the country in save percentage (.837) and goals-against average (0.69), and has limited opponents to one goal or less in 19 of 20 games this season.
Louisville is coming off a 2-1 loss to eventual ACC Tournament champion No. 11 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals of their conference tournament. Louisville is led offensively by Elisa Garcia with 25 points on six goals and 13 assists, followed by Alyssa Voelmle (24, 10-4) and Mallory Mason (24, 7-10).
Sydney King has played nearly every minute in goal for Louisville and holds a 1.27 GAA and .776 save percentage.
