Three Sun Devil Soccer Players Earn Pac-12 Recognition
TEMPE, Ariz – Three Arizona State University women’s soccer players were recognized by the Pac-12 on Tuesday as the conference announced its annual awards for the 2014 season as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Recognized by the league were junior defender McKenzie Berryhill (All-Pac-12 first team), junior forward Cali Farquharson (All-Pac-12 first team) and freshman forward Aly Moon (Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and Pac-12 honorable mention).
Berryhill was one of ASU’s key contributors on a Sun Devil back line that posted the team’s best goals against average (0.91) since the 2006 squad that gave up 0.86 goals per game The Sun Devils allowed one or fewer goals 14 times in 2014, including eight shutouts. Berryhill led off the season by scoring ASU’s only two goals in the Sun Devils’ 2-2 tie vs. Texas (in Hawaii), a game which the Sun Devils trailed 2-0 at the half. Berryhill also assisted on Farquharson’s first of two goals in ASU’s 2-1 win at Utah earlier this month.
Farquharson concluded her junior season as ASU’s leader in goals (14 – tied for first in the Pac-12) and points (31 – third in the Pac-12) for the third consecutive season. She was named the Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 after she scored five goals in ASU’s wins over New Mexico State (two goals) and Nevada (three goals) at the Cats Classic in Tucson. The three goals vs. Nevada, which came in the span of less than six minutes (5:46), represented the second time she tied the single-game school record for goals. She earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors a second time after scoring her ninth goal in ASU’s 1-1 tie vs. No. 1 UCLA (Sept. 26). Farquharson had two goals in both ASU’s 2-0 win at USC (Oct. 17) and its 2-1 win at Utah (Nov. 2), the ninth & 10th multi-goal games of her career.
Moon has combined with Farquharson to give the Sun Devils the top goal-scoring combo in the Pac-12 (22 /Farquharson 14 goals, Moon eight goals). Moon earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors on August 26 following her outstanding debut weekend in ASU’s contests at the Outrigger Resort Shootout (Aug. 22 & 24 in Honolulu, Hawaii). Moon tied a single-game school record with three goals and was one point shy (7) of tying the single-game school record for scoring in ASU’s 5-2 win at Hawaii on Aug. 24. Moon, who leads the team in assist (5), most recently assisted on Madison Stark’s game-winning goal in the Sun Devils’ 1-0 win over Arizona on Friday. Despite missing one game and at least half of two others this season, Moon is tied for seventh in the Pac-12 in goals (eight) and tied for eighth in points (21).
