Nov 12, 2014

SEATTLE – Washington men’s golf head coach Matt Thurmond is pleased to announce the signing of Matt Marrese to a national letter of intent. Marrese comes to Montlake from nearby Sammamish High School in Bellevue, Wash.

"It's an exciting day for us to add Matt to our team,” said Thurmond. “I love his passion for the game and his energy for learning and being great. He has big things ahead."

Marrese is the Washington State high school champion, shooting scores of 65 and 68 at Chambers Bay to win by 11 strokes. His 11-under score of 133 was also the WIAA scoring record for the state tournament.

He has been a dominant prep player, earning three All-KingCo honors, while also being named team MVP three times and honored as the Seattle Times Prep Athlete of the Week.

In junior golf, Marrese won the Junior PGA qualifier at Spanaway Lake with scores of 70 and 69 to qualify for the 39th Junior PGA Championship at Miramount Country Club. Marrese also qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, finishing as the runner-up at the qualifier at Riverbend Golf Course in Fresno, Calif. He shot 1-over 73 and even-par 72 to qualify for the prestigious championship.

"I am honored and excited to be part of such an outstanding program and I look forward to all the things the team has to offer,” said Marrese. “I really enjoy coach Thurmond and I can't wait for what's ahead."

Marrese will join a young Washington team in 2015-16 that graduates only one senior, Golfweek No. 1 Cheng-Tsung Pan. The current Washington team has four true freshmen as part of the new wave of talent under coach Thurmond.
