Women Remain Undefeated while Men Fall to USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif.  Coming off a win over UCLA, the Arizona women’s swimming and diving team beat USC 172-128 continuing their undefeated streak. The men’s team fell to USC 182-118.

The women started off strong winning the 200 medley relay. The team of Bonnie Brandon, Emma Schoettmer, Paige Kremer and Taylor Schick finished first with a time of 1:40.90.

In the next women’s event, Tjasa Oder won the 1000 free in 9:58:59 followed by her teammate Claire Lockridge (10:06.32). Oder has taken the top spot in the 1000 free in every meet thus far. Brandon and Elizabeth Pepper added significant points to the Wildcats’ lead placing as the top two in the 200 free. Brandon finished in 1:47.32 while Pepper touched in 1:49.51. Brandon also won two other events, the 200 back (1:56.71) and 500 free (4:48.76). Oder placed second in the 500 free following Brandon by nine-tenths of a second.

In the 100 breast, Sara Borendame edged out her teammate Schoettmer by 0.21 seconds touching in 1:01.88. Later in the 200 breast, Schoettmer won in 2:12.54 followed by Borendame with a time of 2:14.30.

Schick (23.16) and Kremer (23.51) finished back-to-back in the 50 free. The pair did the same in the 100 free with Schick placing first in 50.13 and Kremer second in 50.69. The Wildcats placed in the top two spots in seven out of the 10 events they won.

The women closed out the day with a win in the 400 free relay when the team of Schick, Kremer, Pepper and Katja Hajdinjak touched in 3:21.81.

In women’s diving, Samantha Pickens took first in the 3 meter dive with a score of 313.88.

The Arizona men’s team gained substantial points from Kevin Cordes, taking first in the 100 breast with a time of 54.19 and the 200 breast in 2:00.49. Andrew Sovero followed Cordes in the 100 breast (54.40) and 200 breast (2:02.95). In addition, Bradley Tandy won the 50 free touching in 19.98.

Rafael Quintero placed first in the 3 meter dive with 332.55 and 1 meter dive with 360.23 for men’s diving.

The Arizona men and women’s diving team will compete next in a diving invite from all day Fri. Nov. 21st to all day Sun. Nov. 23rd in Tucson at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
