Courtney Range Leads No. 15/14 Cal to an 84-64 Win
STOCKTON, Calif. – Playing just 20 miles from her hometown of Manteca, Courtney Range more than doubled her previous career-high with 27 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds to lead No. 15/14 California to an 84-64 win at Pacific in the 2014-15 season opener.
Range was a commanding 10-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, as the Golden Bears (1-0) won comfortably despite late foul trouble. It was her third career double-double, and the sophomore also blocked two shots to begin the season strong after an All-Pac-12 campaign last year.
Freshman Mikayla Cowling scored all but one of her 18 points in the second half and added seven rebounds for a Golden Bears team that shot 46.2 percent from the field and held a 49-33 rebounding edge against a team that took them to overtime last year in Berkeley.
All-American candidates Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray also scored in double figures with Gray scoring 17 points with seven rebounds and Boyd posting her usual all-around line of 12 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.
California hosts Nevada Tuesday night in the home opener at Haas Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
