Anu Solomon Named Polynesian POY Finalist
TUCSON, Ariz. – Announced by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame on Thursday, Arizona redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon is one of five finalists for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award, presented by Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
Solomon is one of two quarterbacks recognized and one of four Pac-12 players honored. The finalists were chosen by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, chaired by former Arizona head coach Dick Tomey.
Arizona is No. 2 among all FBS teams with 273 first downs. UA is one of three teams to have seven players with 20 or more pass receptions this season. UA has produced four all-purpose plays of 80+ yards this season, most in a single campaign since 2009.
UA has 14 players with a pass reception, including 10 with a TD this season. Solomon’s 25 passing TD are 10th-most in career history at Arizona and he averages 28.0 yards per scoring pass.
Solomon leads all FBS freshmen in passing yards per game (305.8) and total offense per game (336.5). Among all FBS quarterbacks, Solomon ranks No. 7 in total offense and No. 9 in passing yards per game. His 25 passing TD are second nationally among freshmen and No. 11 among all passers.
He has thrown five touchdown passes in a game twice this season (California and at WSU) to set a UA freshman single-game record. He has thrown at least four touchdown passes in four games.
The winner of the 2014 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award will be announced on Dec. 9. The formal presentation of the award will be held at the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Celebration Dinner during the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend on Jan. 23, 2015.
