Maroon And Gold World Series Tied Heading Into Decisive Game 5 Sunday

Nov 22, 2014

TEMPE, Ariz. – The inaugural Maroon and Gold World Series is tied at two games apiece heading into the pivotal fifth game Sunday after a ruling in game four nullified Maroon’s 9-5 victory Saturday morning at Packard Stadium.

Maroon looked primed to win the M&G World Series in four games, but was disqualified when, according to commissioner Tracy Smith, they failed to officially report a substitute in the late innings.

“It is vital to the integrity of the game, especially in intersquad scrimmages, to alert the umpires, the opposing team and myself of any changes in either the lineup or out on the field,” Commissioner Smith said. “They didn’t do that and it cost them today.”

Fellow junior left-handers Ryan Kellogg, pitching for Maroon, and Brett Lilek, on the mound for Gold, earned co-Most Valuable Player honors after they combined to throw eight scoreless innings with just two hits and a walk, and eight strikeouts.

“I was pretty certain I had helped bring my team the World Series title,” said Kellogg, who has not allowed a run in two starts this postseason.

Maroon manager Ben Greenspan said Kellogg’s performance was “Clayton Kershaw-esque” but Lilek wasn’t so certain.

“He wasn’t that crispy out there,” Lilek said. “We’ve moved on from today and are already focused on Sunday’s game five.”

First pitch for the final game of the series is Sunday, Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. at Phoenix Muni. Admission and parking are free.
