LOS ANGELES — UCLA (9-2, 6-2), ranked No. 9 by Associated Press, 10th in USA Today Coaches’ Poll and No. 9 in last week’s College Football Playoff ranking, returns to the field on Friday, Nov. 28 to host Stanford (6-5, 4-4) in the Rose Bowl. ABC will televise the game beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sean McDonough, Chris Spielman, and Todd McShay will provide commentary.
The Bruin IMG Radio Network (Chris Roberts, Matt Stevens and Wayne Cook) will radio broadcast all contests on am570 Fox Sports LA. BRUINS AND THE CARDINAL — The Bruins lead the series 45-37-3. Stanford won last year’s meeting, up north, by a score of 24-10. UCLA trailed 3-0 at the half of that contest before leveling the score on a field goal early in the third quarter. Stanford answered with a scoring pass and a short touchdown run. The Bruins made it 17-10 early in the fourth quarter when Brett Hundley connected with Shaq Evans on a three-yard pass. Hundley completed 24 of 39 passes for 192 yards, one td, two interceptions. In 2012, the Bruins were dealt a 35-17 setback in the last meeting played in the Rose Bowl. Hundley completed 20 of 38 passes for 261 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Johnathan Franklin totaled 65 yards on 21 carries. Stanford led 21-10 at the half and used a couple of Bruin turnovers to break the game open in the third quarter. The two teams also tangled in the 2012 P12 Championship Game played at Stanford. The Bruins moved out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter only to see Stanford rally to take a 17-14 halftime lead. UCLA moved ahead, 24-17 after three quarters on a field goal and Franklin’s second scoring run of the game. Stanford answered with a scoring pass and a field goal for the win. UCLA’s last victory in the series was a 23-20 decision in the Rose Bowl in 2008. QB Kevin Craft threw a seven-yard scoring pass to tight end Cory Harkey to provide the winning margin with 10 seconds remaining.
HONORARY CAPTAIN - Troy Aikman, whose No. 8 jersey will be retired today, is the honorary captain. Currently serving as the color analyst on FOX’s No.1 NFL broadcast team, Aikman transferred to UCLA in 1986 after spending two seasons at Oklahoma. He redshirted his first season at UCLA and won the starting quarterback job in 1987 and went on to be named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year. He led the Bruins to a 10-2 record, including a 20-16 victory over Florida in the Aloha Bowl. The following season, the Bruins won their first seven games and rose to the top of the polls in late October. Again, the Bruins finished 10-2, defeating Arkansas 17-3 in the Cotton Bowl. Aikman was third in the Heisman Trophy voting that season. In the spring of 1989, Aikman became the first player chosen in the NFL Draft by the Cowboys for whom he played 12 seasons. In his professional career, he led the Cowboys to three Super Bowl championships and threw for more than 32,000 yards. Aikman was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
