Player of the Week, Two Times
STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford sophomore guard Lili Thompson received just recognition for her impressive start to the 2014-15 season when she was named espnW National Player of the Week late Sunday evening. On Monday, she added to that accolade by being tabbed as Pac-12 Player of the Week for her performances in the Cardinal’s recent games against Connecticut and Texas.
Thompson averaged 26.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in the Cardinal’s 1-1 week against then-No. 1 Connecticut and then-No. 10 Texas. She scored 24 in Stanford’s 88-86 overtime victory over the Huskies on Monday, ending UConn’s 47-game winning streak, and backed that up with career highs in both points (28) and rebounds (7) in the Cardinal’s overtime loss to the Longhorns on Thursday, 87-81.
The sophomore, averaging 26.0 points in Stanford’s first three outings, is the leading scorer on the highest-scoring squad in the Pac-12 (88.3 ppg). She is second in the league in that category and is ninth in field goal percentage (.542), one of just two guards in the conference converting more than 54 percent of their shots.
Spearheading Stanford’s updated attack, Thompson has put up more than 20 in each game this season and is the first Cardinal guard to do that in three straight since Candice Wiggins in 2008.
Stanford has its first road test of the season when it plays New Mexico in The Pit tonight at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. The Cardinal has won five straight road openers and has not lost back-to-back games since Dec. 2010.
The game will be streamed online by the Mountain West Network and also be broadcast on KZSU 90.1FM with Ashley Westhem at the mic. A live audio stream can also be heard on kzsulive.stanford.edu.
