Arizona's Johnson named Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Dec 1, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO - ARIZONA freshman forward Stanley Johnson has been named Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for play from Nov. 24-30, the Conference office announced today in a vote of media who cover Pac-12 men’s basketball.

The Fullerton, Calif., native led Arizona to its second-ever EA Sports Maui Invitational title last week, earning Most Valuable Player honors after leading the team with averages of 15.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.  Johnson netted 14 points along with four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block in UA’s 72-53 win against Missouri, then followed with another 14 points in the 72-68 semifinal victory over Kansas State while pulling down seven rebounds and a crucial steal that sealed the win. His best performance of the weekend was just short of a double-double as he posted 18 points and nine rebounds in the 61-59 win over No. 15 San Diego State, while knocking down four-consecutive free throws in the last 34 seconds of the game. He is the second UA player to earn EA Sports Maui Invitational MVP honors, as Michael Wright took home the trophy when the Wildcats were victorious in 2000.

The honor marks Johnson’s first-career weekly award, and he is just the 36th Pac-12 freshman all-time to earn the weekly honor. It is Arizona's 87th player of the week selection all-time.

The Wildcats return home to Tucson to host Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks. UA will then host No. 9 Gonzaga at McKale Center on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3:15 p.m. in a contest to be televised live on ESPN.
