Roundup: Mike Riley headed to Nebraska

Dec 4, 2014

Huge news out of Lincoln and Corvallis, as Nebraska hired former Oregon State coach Mike Riley as its football coach. Riley is 93-80 as a collegiate head coach.

What. A. Game. No. 25 Utah outlasted No. 8 Wichita State 69-68 in overtime Wednesday night in Salt Lake City, erasing the Shockers’ national-best 35-game regular-season win streak. Commenting for the Salt Lake Tribune, Kurt Kragthorpe writes that Utah’s win over Wichita State is a resume-builder. Jakob Poeltl, that kid can play some baskethoop.

There was another great game in Berkeley, where Cal outlasted Montana in double overtime. Check the Pac-12 Networks recap, yo.

But hey, lest you forget, the Pac-12 Football Championship Game is just one day away, y’all. For the Arizona side of thangs, Kevin Gemmell gives some props to Arizona’s underappreciated offensive line, which has paved the way for a productive season offensively for the ‘Cats.

Up North, Chantel Jennings features the undersized-yet-fast-as-all-get-up Oregon wide receiver Charles Nelson, who has five touchdown receptions this year as a freshman. Jennings also discusses how Oregon football has taken on Marcus Mariota’s “calm demeanor.”

Solid win for the Sun Devils’ men’s hoops team Wednesday night, taking down UNLV 77-55, and Doug Haller writes that Eric Jacobsen powered Arizona State to victory, as he posted 16 points, 12 boards, four assists and three blocks.

A strong defensive effort in the second half led Colorado men’s basketball to a 72-55 win over USF, pens Brian Howell. The Dons scored just 21 points in the second half and final 24 minutes overall.

Jon Wilner tells us that it looks like Stanford football will play in the Foster Farms Bowl at Levi’s Stadium, but it would be even more likely if Arizona won the Pac-12 Football Championship Game. The Cardinal would meet a Big Ten opponent there, and as Wilner tells us, organizers are calling it the Little Rose Bowl.

UCLA linebacker Eric Kendricks is a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, alongside Washington’s Hau’oli Kikaha and two others (Duke’s David Helton and 'Bama’s Landon Collins).

USC quarterback Cody Kessler is a finalist for the Manning Award. Brett Hundley and Marcus Mariota are also on the list.

Washington nose tackle Danny Shelton is a first-team academic All-American, the first Husky to be named as such since Ed Cunningham in 1991.

Tough night for Washington State as the cold-shooting Cougars fell to Idaho 77-71 on Wednesday at Beasley. It was the 109th meeting between those border-state rivals.
