Roundup: Ducks race past 'Noles into CFP National Championship

Man, how ‘bout that performance from Oregon at the Rose Bowl, huh? The Ducks smashed Florida State 59-20 to move on to the College Football Playoff National Championship against Ohio State, and Andy Staples of SI writes that Oregon shed the “soft” label in its rout of Florida State. Meanwhile, Bruce Feldman writes that Oregon football showed it’s more than Marcus Mariota in the win over the ‘Noles. And check out this reaction from Ohio State coach Urban Meyer when he found out the score of the Oregon-Florida State game.


Don’t forget that there are two bowl games involving Pac-12 teams Friday, and Sam Cooper of Yahoo Sports previews the Alamo Bowl between Kansas State and UCLA (3:45 p.m. PT, ESPN).

Washington State

Don’t forget that the Pac-12 men’s basketball season gets underway Friday as well. The fun gets started with a matinee tilt on The Farm between Stanford and Washington State (noon PT, Pac-12 Networks), and Jacob Thorpe notes that Washington State freshman Ny Redding gives the Cougars a true point guard.


Good story from Mike Vernon of The San Francisco Chronicle about Cal men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin surviving cancer, and how that experience has helped him as a hoops coach. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1997, when he was only in his mid-20s, but received his last cancer treatment on April 20, 1998.

Arizona State

Arizona State men’s hoops doesn’t get conference play started until Sunday when it takes on rival Arizona, and Andrew Murawa of Rush The Court discusses Arizona State’s lineup changes as it heads into conference play.


On the other side of the desert coin, Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller is focusing on offense as the ‘Cats prepare for the Devils.


Jon Wilner reports that Stanford cornerback Alex Carter will enter the 2015 NFL draft. No word yet from QB Kevin Hogan, left tackle Andrus Peat or cornerback Wayne Lyons. Wide receiver Devon Cajuste is staying for another year.

Oregon State

Beavers football coach Gary Andersen named Telly Lockette the running backs coach for Oregon State. Lockette was the RBs coach at South Florida for the last two seasons.


Former Colorado football coach Bill McCartney showed up at Colorado men’s basketball practice Thursday and spoke to the team. Buffs take on the Bruins Friday night at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT on FOX Sports 1.


USC men’s hoops opens up against Utah Friday night in the SLC (7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT, ESPNU), and the Trojans are looking to improve against Pac-12 teams, writes Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News. USC enters Pac-12 play sporting an 8-4 record and is playing some of its best basketball of the young season, winning seven of its last eight.


The NFL playoffs also start this weekend, and Brandon Judd of the Deseret News features former Ute and current Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Brice McCain. The Steelers take on the Ravens Saturday in a wildcard matchup.
