No. 20 Gym Devils Face Kentucky, LSU in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- After posting the best home-opening score since 2009, the 20th-ranked Arizona State women’s gymnastics team (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) heads to Lexington, Ky., for a trimeet with the No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats and the No. 2 LSU Tigers, Friday at 5 p.m. MT at Memorial Coliseum.

After scoring a 194.200, the best score since ASU beat Missouri to open the season in 2009, the Sun Devils vaulted up the rankings into 20th in the nation. Behind by .550 heading into the final rotation, ASU hit three successive scores of 9.800-plus on floor to by pass No. 25 Southern Utah en route to head coach Rene Lyst’s first career victory as the head coach of the Sun Devils.

Arizona State came through in final moments of the meet on floor but it was bars where all six competitors hit their routines. ASU had the benefit of dropping a score of 9.700 for an event-total of 49.050, good for sixth in the nation and the highest bar ranking for the Sun Devils since 2007.

Lyst will be heading back to the south to compete against familiar SEC competition, as the first-year head coach came to Arizona State after winning two NCAA individual championships as co-head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
