Jan 15, 2015

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona Women’s Tennis team kicks off the spring season this weekend, as it heads to Palm Springs, Calif. to compete in the 2015 National Collegiate Tennis Classic.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. MST on Friday and Saturday and at 10 a.m. MST Sunday. All matches will take place at the Sunrise Country Club.

“We’re really excited to get the spring season started,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “It’ll be good for our girls to get some action on the court against a different team. This is a good way to prepare ourselves for the season.”

The 35th ranked Wildcats will be joined by top-ranked and defending national champion UCLA, eighth ranked Stanford, 10th ranked Texas A&M, 14th ranked Southern California, 26th ranked Pepperdine and San Diego.

The Cats enter the 2015 spring slate loaded with a balanced squad filled with senior leadership and fresh talent, as Arizona returns four letterwinners from a year ago in senior Laura Oldham, junior Shayne Austin, junior Inge Hendrikx, and sophomore Lauren Marker, while welcoming in three newcomers in junior transfer Briar Preston, freshman Devin Chypyha, and freshman Hanna Sohn.

Oldham paced the Wildcats during the fall campaign, posting a dominant 4-1 singles mark, while claiming a flight championship at the Cal State Northridge Matador Fall Invitational back in October.

Marker also proved she could compete with the nation’s best during the fall, as she advanced all the way to the Round of 16 in ITA Southwest Regional Championship action. She also claimed a dramatic come-from-behind 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over TCU’s then-ranked No. 31 Stefanie Tan. Hendrikx also claimed a team-high six fall victories, posting a 6-2 singles record overall.
