Friday Night Lights: 13th-Ranked Bruins Dominate Oregon State

UCLA recorded the best time in 12 of 14 races on Friday night at Osborn Aquatic Center, as the 13th-ranked Bruins posted a 151-102 victory. Senior Jessica Khojasteh and juniors Katie Kinnear and Arlyn Upshaw each won twice, both UCLA relays were victorious and junior Katy Campbell, sophomore Madison White and freshman Marie-Pierre Delisle and Sarah Kaunitz all won races.

The Bruins won the opening 200 Medley Relay, as freshman Hannah Grubbs, sophomore Brigitte Winkler, junior Madison Applegate and senior Courtney Wilde posted a time of 1:44.07. The UCLA B team of White, Khojasteh, Kinnear and Kaunitz (1:46.89) was third. Oregon State claimed the 1000 Freestyle, with the Bruins earning points in the 2-4 positions. Campbell was second (9:48.26), followed by freshman MK Kish (10:20.47) and junior Shannon Cheung (10:41.00).

UCLA returned to the winning column in the 200 Free when White had a 1:51.28. Sophomore Michaela Merlihan was third (1:52.11) and sophomore Savannah Steffen placed fourth (1:54.10). The Bruins posted a 1-2-4 finish in the 100 Backstroke, as Kinnear won in a time of 56.04. Grubbs was second (57.66), while freshman Natalie Amberg finished fourth (58.23). The Beavers won the 100 Breaststroke, with Winkler finishing second (1:06.19). Sophomore Maggie Burton was fourth (1:06.72) and Kaunitz placed fifth (1:07.34).

The Bruins earned the top three positions in the 200 Butterfly, as Upshaw won with a 2:02.07. Delisle was second (2:04.47) and Applegate placed third (2:05.84). It was another 1-2-3 finish in the 50 Free, as Khojasteh won it with a 23.94, followed by Wilde (24.31) and Kinnear (24.35). After the first break, Kaunitz won the 100 Free (51.39), as the Bruins had another 1-2-3 showing. White was second (51.47) and Steffen third (53.03).

In the 200 Back, Delisle won with a time of 2:03.16. Grubbs posted the third-best time (2:04.35), while Amberg was fourth (2:05.83). UCLA had the first- and third-best times in the 200 Breast, as Khojasteh won her second of the meet with a 2:16.93. Winkler was third (2:22.04). Campbell claimed the 500 Free with a time of 4:48.97. Merlihan produced the third-best mark (5:02.60), while Kish was fourth (5:03.15).

The Bruins had the top three times in the 100 Fly. Kinnear was first to record her second victory of the meet (55.43), followed by Applegate (56.22) and freshman Maddy Burnham (58.07). Upshaw posted her second win of the night in the 200 Individual Medley with a 2:04.43. Kish recorded the second-best time (2:07.26). The UCLA relays had the top two times in the final race, the 400 Free Relay. White, Khojasteh, Wilde and Burnham were first (3:29.61), while Applegate, Amberg, Hammond and Upshaw placed second (3:32.68).

After Friday's traditional meet, the Bruins and the Beavers have an untraditional relay meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Dixon Recreation Center.

Competition for this weekend's Bruin Diving Invitational starts on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Center with the Women's 3-Meter and Men's 1-Meter at 8:30 a.m.
