Bruins Drop Match at BYU in Four
The fourth-ranked men's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision in an MPSF match played at No. 7 BYU on Saturday night. Scores of the contest - BYU d. UCLA 17-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-15. It was the Cougars' 28th straight match win on their home court.
Michael Fisher led UCLA with 12 kills, a couple of aces and seven digs. Trent Kersten totaled seven kills, hit .429 and added five blocks. Jackson Bantle had 15 digs on the night. Freshman Jake Arnitz put down nine kills while hitting .333.
UCLA came out blazing in set one, serving tough and owning the net, for a 7-2 advantage. After Fisher's third kill of the set, UCLA held a 15-8 lead. Clayton Paullin put up UCLA's sixth block of the set for a 20-10 margin. Kersten's kill handed UCLA the 25-17 win. The Bruins hit .303 for the set.
Set two was a battle from start to finish. BYU took an early 5-4 lead. UCLA evened it up at 13-all. A Fisher ace leveled the score at 19 and UCLA went up 20-19 after a block by Arnitz. The Bruins were caught at 23 and a Bantle dig saved a set point, before the home team captured a 24-26 win.
The Bruins stormed out to a 5-1 lead in set three. BYU closed to 10-8. The score was then even at 12, 14 and 16, before the Cougars took a 17-19 lead. A Bruin service error gave BYU a set point and they went on to take the set at 20-25.
BYU shot out to a 4-11 lead in set four and led 5-15 after completing a nine to one run. UCLA came back to cut the margin to 11-19 on a Kersten block. It was too little, too late and BYU emerged with a 15-25 win. The home team outhit the Bruins .519 to .034 in the set.
UCLA falls to 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in MPSF play. Next up will be a non-conference match on Jan. 25 in the Wooden Center against Princeton. First serve will be shortly after 7 p.m. The Bruins will then return to MPSF action and play host Pepperdine on Jan. 27 and Stanford on Jan. 29 in Pauley Pavilion.
