Getting To Know: Trysten Melhart

Jan 17, 2015

You’re from Snohomish, Washington. Did you grow up a Husky fan? When did you know you wanted to play softball at UW?

Yes, my dad was a Husky fan so naturally growing up, I became a fan too. I knew I wanted to play softball at UW the first time I went to one of their camps. I loved the field/stadium and the coaches were great. Everything about it overwhelmed me with joy. I knew I'd love to play softball here.

The adjustment to college has been just fine! I've loved every minute of it except for maybe dead week. I'm a very independent person so college is awesome for me.

There are so many things I am looking forward to this season, but mostly I'm just excited to finally get out there and play the game I love with an amazing team and coaching staff. I've been waiting for this moment for so many years so it's crazy that it's almost finally here.

I think my competitiveness and desire to win. Also, maybe my speed.

Eve Gaw has been my biggest inspiration during my softball career. She was an assistant coach when I first came to a UW camp when I was about 10 years old. I have been hitting with her at least once a week ever since. I even just recently saw and hit with her over winter break. She has always been there for me and helped me not only with my game, but just life in general. Not only has she made me a better player, but a better person. She helped me get recruited and gave me pointers with hitting, fielding, working out, grades, attitude and being smart about what I do and say. She is an amazing person!

Incredible. I don't think I stopped smiling once when I was out there. I loved everything-- putting on my uniform, new cleats, pre-game, competing and winning. It was great to see all of the fans in the stands and signing autographs after the game. I don't think I've ever been happier; the feeling was indescribable.

My personal goals for my freshman year are to be a starter and play to the best of my ability and give it my all. Also to fulfill any role I'm given on the team. Whatever it takes to win, I'll do it.
