Women’s Tennis Set for First Home Match of 2015

Jan 22, 2015

TUCSON, Ariz. The 34th ranked Arizona Women’s Tennis team opens up their home season on Saturday, Jan. 24 as they take on the New Mexico State Aggies. The match will take place at the home of the Wildcats at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center at noon.

“We are excited to start our team season,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We’ve worked hard in the fall with these matches in mind and we finally get to come together as a group and compete. It will be interesting to see the new format in play, but I think it will add to the excitement of college tennis.”

The match against New Mexico State marks the first dual match of the season after the Wildcats competed in five tournaments this fall. Arizona finished 31-23 in singles matches in the Riviera/ITA All-America Championships, the Arizona Invitational, the ITA Southwest Regional Championship, the Matador Fall Collegiate Invitational and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. Senior Laura Oldham led the way with a record of 6-2 while junior Inge Hendrikx finished with a 7-4 record. Sophomore Lauren Marker is riding a two game winning streak and looks to extend said streak this weekend. Marker has gained some regional attention as she was ranked 15th in the southwest region.

The duo of junior Shayne Austin and freshman Hanna Sohn (ranked eighth in the southwest region) were the most successful doubles team this fall as the Wildcats finished 10-11 as a team. Austin/Sohn posted a record of 4-0 and won the doubles title in the Arizona Invitational in October. Hendrikx and Oldham also enjoyed some success in doubles as they earned a record of 3-1 in the fall.

The unranked Aggies bring in Ashvarya Shrivastava, the 122nd ranked player in the country according to the ITA. Saturday will mark the first time New Mexico State has competed since November 9th when they participated in the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz.

The New Mexico State dual match is free of admission. LaNelle Robson Tennis Center is located just west of Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium on 2nd street and Campbell Ave.
