No. 1 Women's Tennis Cruises Past Marshall, 4-0 in Season Opener
LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA women's tennis team played its season opener on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, dispatching of Marshall, 4-0 during ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Bruins (1-0) advance to Sunday's second round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend where they will meet Kansas State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The winner of that match will earn a spot in next month's USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
The defending NCAA Champion Bruins were just too much for unranked Marshall (1-1), as the Herd was dominated in all phases of Saturday's contest. It started in doubles, where UCLA quickly clinched the point with a 6-0 win at court No. 1 followed by a 6-3, decision at court No. 2. It marked the 30th straight doubles point for UCLA, which has not surrendered the point since a showdown with North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA Championships.
Singles was much of the same for the Bruins, who quickly went ahead 2-0 in the match when freshman Terri Fleming picked up the first dual-match victory of her career by downing Marija Bogicevic, 6-0, 6-0. Another 6-0, 6-0 win for the Bruins would soon follow as third-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen posted the same score over Maddie Silver at court No. 2.
Senior Kaitlin Ray got the clinching victory for the Bruins at the No. 4 spot, where she bested Anna Pomyatinskaya, 6-0, 6-4. Ray is currently listed at No. 79 in the ITA singles rankings.
Saturday also marked the dual-match debut for freshman Kristin Wiley, who teamed with Van Nguyen in doubles at court No. 3.
