No. 6 Cal Books Ticket to ITA National Indoors

Jan 26, 2015

BERKELEY - In the very last match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Maegan Manasse defeated Danielle Flores of Saint Mary's and handed sixth-ranked California a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Virginia. Manasse, ranked fifth nationally in singles, posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over the 32nd-ranked Gael at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Eight days ago, Manasse needed three sets to defeat Flores at Hellman during the Cal Winter Invitational. This time, the Cal sophomore dominated the first set and held off a late charge to beat the Gael in straight sets on court one (Newmark Stadium).

The Bears (2-0) next play in the ITA's national indoor tournament slated for Feb. 6-9 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“It’s always a real qualify match when you play them,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said of the 1-1 Gaels. “In the doubles today they pushed us around a little bit, and I thought that was good; we needed a little bit of a test. They were able to win on court three, so we’ve got a little bit of work to do.

“In the singles I was really proud of how our team really focused consistently. That was our goal – to maintain a certain level of play throughout the match, start to finish. I thought that was a good team effort by us, and obviously we’re excited to advance to Virginia in about a week and a half.”

The ninth-ranked team of junior Klara Fabikova and senior Zsofi Susanyi beat the Gaels’ Mary-Anne Jessup and Jamie Pawid, 6-0, on court two (Bud Chandler Court) to open doubles, and then the other two matches went down to the wire. The Saint Mary’s pair of Flores and Kareena Manji pulled out a 6-1 victory over senior Cecilia Estlander and freshman Stephane Lin on court three (Mascarin Court) just seconds before Cal’s fourth-ranked team of Manasse and sophomore Denise Starr beat Jana McCord and Parminder Kaur, 6-2, on court one (Newmark Stadium) to clinch the doubles point for the Bears.

Cal was dominant in singles, winning the first set on all six courts. Freshman Karla Popovic – ranked 30th nationally – quickly bested the 94th-ranked Manji, 6-0, 6-2 on court five (Hirschler-Davidson Court) to give Cal a 2-0 lead. The 14th-ranked Susanyi beat the 123rd-ranked Catherine Leduc, 6-2, 6-0, on Mascarin Court, and then Manasse settled matters with her victory.

On Jan. 18 in the Cal Winter Invitational, Flores took a set off of Manasse before falling, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, to the Golden Bear.

“Today I definitely came out stronger than I did last weekend,” Manasse said. “She started playing a little bit better towards the end of the second set, but I was able to close it out.”

“She’s learned how to make adjustments,” Augustus said of her second-year star. “I thought she transitioned quite well, and she worked on putting the ball in a few different spots to be able to get a shorter ball sooner with Danielle. That was a really good victory for her.”

Today’s action at Hellman – which included unranked Michigan State upsetting No. 72 Fresno State, 4-3, in a consolation match – featured the last two matches of the 2015 ITA Kick-Off Weekend on both the men’s and women’s sides.
