Payton II Named Pac-12 Player Of The Week
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State junior guard Gary Payton II was named the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Payton II averaged 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals to lead the Beavers to a home sweep over the L.A. schools. He had 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals against UCLA and followed that with a double-double against USC with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a game-clinching steal in the final seconds against the Trojans.
A native of Las Vegas, Payton II leads Oregon State in scoring, rebounding and steals, and has helped the Beavers achieve their best overall record (14-5) and Pac-12 record (5-2) since 1990. He has multiple steals in 12 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak in school history.
His father, the legendary Gary Payton, was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week nine times, the most of any player in conference history.
This is the 46th time an Oregon State player has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week (A.C. Green and Charlie Sitton shared it on March 12, 1984).
