TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men’s golf team kicked off its spring season with the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Sewailo Golf Club on Monday. The Wildcats are currently fifth overall out of 15 teams at four over par, nine shots behind leader Arizona St. Freshman George Cunningham is tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard at 2-under (140), five strokes off the lead. Round two was cut short due to darkness with only a few players left on the course and will be completed starting at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The final round is expected to tee off around 8 a.m.

“I was really proud of our team’s patience today,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “We talked about playing the course and accepting the challenging conditions with a great attitude. We know we can play better and to see the improvement after a rough stretch this morning is a testament to our belief in the process. We have a lot of guys that deserve credit today because our second round was our best of the year.”

After posting a 10-over 294 in the first round, Arizona improved by 16 strokes in the second round to post a six-under 278. Cunningham shot a two-over 73 in the first round, but bounced back to card a 4-under 67 in round two. Senior Brenden Redfern opened with a four-over 75, but came back to shoot a three-under 68 during the second part of the day. Redfern is currently tied for 15th at one over par (141).

“George is a fantastic player and he played very well,” Anderson added. “I was so happy for Brenden because he got himself under par and finished it off great. We are looking forward to our best golf tomorrow.”

Freshman Max Donohue is only two strokes behind Redfern at three over (145), which is tied for 23rd, while senior Alex McMahon, who is tied for 29th, was right on his heels shooting a four-over 146. Junior Kolton Lapa posted a five-over 147, which included a two-over 73 in the first round that was counted in the team score.
