UCLA's Powell named Pac-12 men's basketball Player of the Week
SAN FRANCISCO - UCLA senior guard Norman Powell has been named Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for play from Jan. 26-Feb. 1, the Conference office announced today in a vote of media who cover Pac-12 men’s basketball.
The San Diego, Calif., native led UCLA in scoring in both victories last week, averaging 22.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game. Powell scored a team-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting with a 5-for-6 mark from the free-throw line in the Bruins’ 69-59 win over No. 11 UTAH on Thursday. He followed that with a 22-point game two nights later versus Colorado, going 7-for-11 from the field and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Powell also registered five rebounds, four assists and five steals in the 72-59 win against the Buffaloes. On the weekend, the senior shot 59.3 percent, connecting on 16 of 27 shots and making 12 of 14 free throws. Powell is averaging a team-leading 16.1 points per game this season.
The honor marks Powell’s second-career weekly award, with his first coming earlier this season on Nov. 24, 2014. It is UCLA’s 59th weekly selection all-time.
The Bruins head to the Bay Area this week, playing at Stanford on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. PT in a game to be televised on ESPN2. UCLA then faces California on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks.
