Chris Petersen extremely excited for long snapper recruit A.J. Carty

Feb 4, 2015

Some coaches get pumped up about top-flight quarterbacks, and rightfully so. Some are always jacked about the crop of five-star recruits they land, and that's great, too.

But for Washington football coach Chris Petersen, he wanted to make sure to tell everyone about his new guy that isn't under center, but actually is the center.

Enter A.J. Carty, a 6-foot-1, 270-pound long snapper from Santa Ana, Calif., and Servite High School.

"Nobody wants to talk about the long-snapper," Petersen said with a little extra gusto, "but let me tell you, this guy can fire the rock. It's amazing how he can snap the ball."

The common (and unfair) refrain often goes that you don't notice special teamers until the game is on the line or they do something wrong. So in essence, a guy who can snap the ball to a kicker or punter on the regular without making a mistake is one of the most important guys on the time, right?
